The 1.5 mile long Framingham section will start in the Village of Saxonville near the Sudbury River and Framingham High School. It will travel southeast following Cochituate Brook and cross Old Connecticut Path with a pedestrian operated traffic signal. After passing Cochituate Brook Reservation, the trail will cross under the Massachusetts Turnpike, then under the Exit 13 ramp, and terminate at Route 30 near Home Depot and Cochituate State Park. The trail will pass close to several residential areas, and many office buildings on Speen Street and Old Connecticut Path. Rail service along this section was discontinued in 1973. The rails and ties have been removed and the property is in good condition. The rail line is currently owned by two state agencies: The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority (MTA). The MBTA owns the 1-mile of rail line between Saxonville and the MassPike. The MTA owns the half-mile of rail line which passes under the highway and continues southeast to Route 30. The Town of Framingham has been granted a permanent trail easement from the MTA and is currently negotiating a long-term lease with the MBTA. The latest information on the trail is available under Hot Topics & Developments. This section of the CRT has been under development for the past five years and much has been accomplished. In September 2001, the Town of Framingham created the Framingham CRT Committee to work with the Planning Department and oversee the development of the trail. The Committee has hosted over 20 workdays so far, the rail line has been cleared of brush and trash and decayed ties were removed from two railroad bridges. Learn more about the Framingham CRT Committee. The Framingham section of the CRT is not yet open to the public, however the Town expects to open a short section of trail sometime in 2007. Please note that the CRT is not yet open for public use.
